New York residents have sued the World Health Organization over its handling and response to the coronavirus pandemic.
In the proposed class-action lawsuit, Steve Rotker, Richard Kling, and Gennaro Purchia, the three masterminds behind the lawsuit, accused WHO of causing “incalculable” damage and conspiring with the Chinese government to cover up the true extent of the pandemic.
As the men argued in the lawsuit filed in the White Plains federal court, WHO failed to act quickly and worked with China to cover up the truth.
In addition, the residents claimed the organization caused “incalculable” damage to hundreds of thousands of Westchester county residents who were among the first in the U.S. to be hit hard by the novel coronavirus.
“The Chinese government and the WHO intentionally misled the international community, including the named Plaintiffs, about the coronavirus and its devastating medical and economic effects,” the lawsuit reportedly reads.
While WHO didn’t officially respond to the lawsuit as of this writing, an international law professor Chimène Keitner explained that the suit will most likely be dismissed due to WHO’s “functional immunity” from cases of this kind.
Meanwhile, the Chinese government is facing multiple lawsuits related to its handling of the coronavirus outbreak.
In a recent turn of events, Missouri has sued China for “lying to the world” about the coronavirus pandemic and causing “enormous death, suffering, and economic losses.”
As the increasing pressure on China over its handling of the pandemic is becoming more and more evident, Missouri has blamed the Chinese government for the devastating outcome in a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for Eastern Missouri.
“The Chinese government lied to the world about the danger and contagious nature of COVID-19, silenced whistleblowers, and did little to stop the spread of the disease. They must be held accountable for their actions,” the office of Missouri Attorney General Eric S. Schmitt wrote in a statement.
According to the reports, the lawsuit represents the first time a U.S. state has sued the People’s Republic of China over coronavirus pandemic concerns.
“In this case, the State of Missouri seeks recovery for the enormous loss of life, human suffering, and economic turmoil experienced by all Missourians from the COVID-19 pandemic that has disrupted the entire world,” an introductory part of the lawsuit, which was uploaded online, in full copy, by Fox News, reads.
“An appalling campaign of deceit, concealment, misfeasance, and inaction by Chinese authorities unleashed this pandemic.point 212 |
During the critical weeks of the initial outbreak, Chinese authorities deceived the public, suppressed crucial information, arrested whistleblowers, denied human-to-human transmission in the face of mounting evidence, destroyed critical medical research, permitted millions of people to be exposed to the virus, and even hoarded personal protective equipment — thus causing a global pandemic that was unnecessary and preventable.point 374 | 1
“Defendants are responsible for the enormous death, suffering, and economic losses they inflicted on the world, including Missourians, and they should be held accountable.”
