A group of animal rescuers has managed to save over seven dozen dogs from a grim fate at a meat farm in South Korea.
Thanks to hardworking people at Humane Society International (HSI), over 70 dogs found at a dog meat farm were spared and given a second chance at life.
According to the reports, the rescuers not only saved the lives of the dogs but also assisted the farm owner, Nakseon Kim, by helping him transition to a vegetable farm after over 40 years of breeding dogs for meat.
As the farm owner admitted in a statement to HSI, “there is no future in this dog meat industry” and he’s looking forward to growing and selling crops instead.
“I don’t think there are many people in South Korea who are willing to run dog meat farms anymore. There is no future in this dog meat industry,” Mr. Kim said.
“Once HSI helps me close my dog farm, I think I will start to grow crops instead like lettuce, cabbage, or other greens to sell to restaurants. That is a business with a future.”
With fewer and fewer people desiring dog meat and new regulations imposed in South Korea, plenty of farmers are looking for help in transitioning to a cruelty-free farm.
Speaking of the grim fate that many dogs in the country still face, campaigner Nara Kim of HSI said:
“Unfortunately, it is still very common in South Korea to witness live puppies for sale in pet shop windows. But, what most Koreans will be shocked to learn is that these same puppies could easily have ended up being killed for human consumption instead.
“Whether they live or die, they are all born in this miserable place, their mothers intensively bred over and over until they are exhausted and eventually sold to slaughterhouses.”
While there is still a long way to ending dog meat trade completely, every success story is a small step forward, and over 70 pups have now gotten a second chance at life.
