White House reporters were left baffled after a “weird” one-minute conference during which Donald Trump thanked Americans for helping push the Dow Jones over the 30,000 mark for the first time.
During a Tuesday press briefing, the president briefly opened up about the Dow Jones milestone and coronavirus vaccine before rushing off the stage without answering any questions.
According to the event’s official transcript, Trump appeared on the stage at 12:31 pm. Just a minute later, at 12:32 pm, he dashed off the stage, leaving reporters baffled.
“That was weird as s***,” one of the reporters was heard saying in a video after Trump left the stage without answering any questions.
“We’ve never broken 30,000. And that’s despite everything that’s taken place with the pandemic,” Trump said during the brief briefing.
“I’m very thrilled with what’s happened on the vaccine front. That’s been absolutely incredible. It’s – nothing like that has ever happened medically. And I think people are acknowledging that, and it’s having a big effect.”
Returning to the Dow Jones topic, Trump added:
“That’s a sacred number: 30,000. Nobody thought they’d ever see it. That’s the ninth time since the beginning of 2020, and it’s the 48th time that we’ve broken records in – during the Trump administration. And I just want to congratulate all the people within the administration that worked so hard.”
After congratulating “the people of our country” and thanking everyone, Trump made a hasty getaway, prompting puzzled reporters to verbally express their confusion.
“That was weird as s***,” one reporter said. Another one suggested the conference was “one of the stranger” briefings.
