A TV reporter has sparked fury online after she made a cruel remark on Twitter.
Rita Marrafa de Carvalho wrote to her more than 52,000 followers that she got her son and his friends to behave by shouting: “Stop or I’m going to call the McCanns!”
A mom to 8-year-old Miguel and 12-year-old Mariana made her reference to the McCanns when describing her son’s birthday bash.
She wrote: “At my eight-year-old son’s party, with everyone running and screaming, spilling crisps and M&M’s, and messing with everything they shouldn’t, I confess I shouted: ‘Stop or I’m going to call the McCanns.”
The mother-of-two admitted she ‘regretted’ it but also said that ‘at least it worked.’
“I’m not proud of it but it worked. At least with my child it did. He quietened down after that,” she added.
Her post came only months after another Portuguese reporter claimed that Kate McCann was an MI5 operative.
A source close to the McCanns said: “It’s a horrible thing to say. She should know the pain and heartache they are going through.
“There’s always been this inaccurate misconception that Kate and Gerry were somehow responsible for Maddie going missing.
“This is another bitter attempt at suggesting that.”
Carvalho is a leading Portuguese reporter and has worked on the case of McCanns during her 20-year career.
One fan called her ‘idiot’ while another said ‘Disgusting!!”
Madeleine or Maddie was only three years old when she disappeared from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in May 2007.
Earlier this month, an additional £300,000 has been approved by the Home Office to search for clues of her whereabouts.
