While talking to members of the public regarding the high street, ITV reporter Rob Osborn stopped Mr.
Owen Filer, who was mistaken for a 65-year-old.
The video clip shows Mr. Filer saying to Rob: “Oh, I’ve been here all my life. I’m 100 years old.”
Rob can be heard laughing a little as he thought the army veteran was joking but the 100-year-old cut him off and said: “Yes I am. I’m 100 years old. I can remember the trams looking down there – look.”
A shocked Rob then asked: “Are you actually 100 years old?”
Mr. Filer replied: “Yes,” then continued: “You had to cross the road to get on the tram…” The man really wanted to tell the story about the high street.
Rob, who didn’t want to believe it, asked the vet his date of birth. At this point, he’s starting to look like a bouncer who doesn’t believe your age and ID so basic details were required.
Mr. Filer then replied to his question immediately, saying: “19-10-19 and I tell no lies.”
“You’re 100 years old?” Rob asked once again. “Do you believe this man’s 100 years old?”
Mr. Filer, almost losing his patience to this parrot, said: “I know you don’t, I know, you never will – you never will. Ask my doctor, it’s on my prescription – 19/10/19, that’s when I was born.” He also joked: “Ask my mother, she was there at the time.”
According to South Wales Argus, Mr. Filer was born in Pontnewydd on October 19, 1919 and he lived in the Cwnbran his entire life.
“I watched the new town being built during my life,” he said.
He was 14 when he finished school and started to work at Cwmbran Gardens Hotel. In 1940, he was called up to fight in World War Two and served in the 9th Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
Mr. Filer met the love of his life, Laura, when posted in Llandudno for training. They were married for six decades until Mrs. Filer passed away in 2004.
When asked about his secret to a long life he told the publication: “I really don’t know. Everything in moderation. I got drunk in the Army once and I never wanted to do it again.
“I still feel like a young man, I’m a young old man.”
