Woman Folded Her Towels Then Cut Into Them Into Strips To Make Rugs

There’s nothing quite like a fun DIY project that lets you reuse some old things that you would otherwise throw out.

This DIY project does both of those perfectly. With this project you will be turning any old bath towels you have laying around into a beautiful new rug.

What do you need? Just a sewing needle, some thread, scissors and some old bath towels. Not long after you will have a very soft and beautiful rug that can fit in any room or even become a new mat for your bathroom!

The first step you will want to do is fold the towels in half and cut the towels into one-inch strips. Marianne from HGTV Handmade cuts about 13 strips for her medium sized rug, to give you an estimate of how many you should have.

Next you’re gonna want to take a strip of each color and sew the three ends together like above. This will be the start of your new rug!

After you’ve sewn the three ends together you should start to braid the three strips of towel together.

Make sure when you’re braiding, you take special care that you’re folding the ends so that the raw edges don’t show.

When you’ve reached the end of strips, sew the next set of strips to create one big, long braid. Continue to braid the newly sewn strips as well.

After you’ve created one long braid it’s time to start coiling it up into a rug. As you coil it, you will want to stitch it so that it doesn’t uncoil. Very quickly you will see the rug begin to form right before your eyes.

Once you’ve finally coiled the entire braid up, you will need to sew the ends together and make sure it’s all sewn together nice and tight.

Voilà! You have now created your very own bath mat from some old bath towels. Most certainly beats just tossing them in the trash and you get a cool new rug out of it!

This “lifehack” is so neat I might just need to try it out myself and except for the sewing, this could also be done with your kids for a neat project and they can be so proud that they helped make something really cool!
