Many dogs are already well-known for their loyalty and bravery.

If you’ve ever wondered why your dog paws at you from time to time, don’t always assume they just want to get some treats.

Rebecca Forrest, an assistance dog trainer, said in a post for The Dog Clinic that “Dogs use their paws to communicate.” She also said that to determine what your dog could be trying to say, you can use some context clues.

“Dogs thrive on human companionship. We’ve bred them to be dependent on us for everything – including fun and social interaction – so they aren’t shy about letting us know they’re feeling neglected,” Forrest said, adding that other reasons for a dog pawing at you could be that they are feeling insecure or hungry.

“A raised paw in dog language can signal your dog is feeling stressed,” she explained, adding that if your dg is showing other signs of stress, like smacking their lips or flattening their ears, it is important to “stay positive and try to distract him from what he is thinking about.”

But there is also another reason – and it’s melting everyone’s hearts!

If your adorable pooch starts pawing at you, it could be trying to express how much he/she loves you!

“By putting his paw on you whilst you are stroking him, he is further extending contact and reciprocating affection back,” Forrest added.

Cats are also known to show a similar behavior by kneading. Live Science explained that ‘kneading’ could be felines’ way to show humans they are happy.

The outlet added: “In adulthood, a cat supposedly will knead when it’s feeling happy or content because it associates the motion with the comforts of nursing and its mother.”
