Real-life Tarzan who lived in the jungle for 40 years has passed away from liver cancer at the age of 52.
Ho Van Lang was only two years old when he was taken into the jungle by his father Ho Van Thanh after members of their family died during the Vietnam War.
For 41 years, the two stayed in the wilderness before they finally returned to society eight years ago.
Many people believe that their return in 2013 did more harm than good, suggesting that Lang’s poor health condition has been down to eating processed foods and eating alcohol.
Lang’s friend, Alvaro Cezero, said that the ‘modern’ lifestyle may have contributed to his early death.
“I’m so sad to see him go, but for me his passing is also a liberation because I know he was suffering in the last months,” Cezero said.
“He was a beautiful human being, to forget him will be impossible, I will miss him every day.”
“But I didn’t like seeing him living in civilization. I was always concerned that he and his body wouldn’t be able to handle such a drastic change,” Cezero continued.
“He had spent all his life living in the jungle and then came to live in the ‘civilized world’ where he started eating processed foods and sometimes even drinking alcohol.”
In the wilderness, Lang and his father wore clothes made from tree bark. They ate fruits that they gathered and corn that they grew.
Only eight years after leaving the jungle, Lang passed away from liver cancer.
Minh Thao, the Secretary of the Party’s Committee of Tra Bong District Dang, said in a statement: “In early 2021, Mr. Lang suffered from severe pain in the abdomen. His relatives took him to a hospital in Quang Ngai city for examination, and he was diagnosed with liver cancer.
“When the Covid-19 epidemic broke out, he had to self-treat at home. The disease progressed so badly that he did not survive.”
