The animal, which is a sign of good luck among indigenous cultures, was reportedly gunned down by poachers even though white moose in the area are protected by law.

According to the reports, the white-colored moose in question are not albinos. Instead, they get their white looks from a recessive gene.

While the locals of Timmins have long been exchanging stories about white moose sightings, a presumed hunter or group of hunters now angered the residents by killing one of the sacred animals.

“Everybody is outraged and sad. Why would you shoot it? No one needs one that bad. If you have a license to shoot a cow moose, you could shoot another one. Just leave the white ones alone,” Murray Ray, the Chief of Flying Post First Nation, expressed.

As reported, the hunters shot two moose, whereas one of them was a white one. Both bodies, along with the animals’ heads, were allegedly dumped along a remote road.

“It saddens me that somebody would take such a beautiful animal. Nobody knows exactly how many are in the area, so the loss of a single spirit moose is one too many,” Flying Post member Troy Woodhouse added.

Following the illegal killing of the animal protected by local legislation, a reward of $8,000 has been promised for the arrest of the perpetrators.

“I really hope they find the people that are responsible for this and they’re charged,” Ray added.
