In a heartbreaking incident, a 5-year-old boy became the first child in NYC to have died from an inflammatory condition, which is believed to be associated with the novel coronavirus.
New York’s governor Andrew Cuomo said on Friday at a press briefing that the kid passed away in NYC on Thursday night. The officials at a children’s hospital (Mouth Sinai Kravis Hospital) where the kid was being treated said that he had tested positive for coronavirus.
Cuomo noted that the health authorities are currently investigating 73 similar cases that were recorded in the city. In these cases, the children showed the symptoms of toxic shock-like syndrome or Kawasaki disease.
The increasing number of cases is contrasting earlier beliefs that kids are less susceptible to coronavirus complications.
Cuomo noted that in rare cases, they were witnessing cases where children suffering from the coronavirus can become sick with symptoms similar to toxic shock-like syndrome or Kawasaki disease that causes inflammation in blood vessels.
Efforts are underway to gather information on the disorder. The New York Health Department issued on Wednesday a notice asking all hospitals to report any such cases to the department.
Similar cases of children having life-threatening inflammatory illnesses linked to exposure to coronavirus were reported initially in Spain, Italy, and Britain.
However, doctors in the U.S.A. like New York, New Jersey, and California are reporting clusters of children with the disorder that can attack several organs, weaken heart arteries, and impair heart functions.
Cuomo noted that the news was proof that parents cannot be relieved with the knowledge that their kids are safe from coronavirus. He added that as first the doctors believed children would be vehicles of transmission but did not realize they could suffer from it as well.
In Westchester County, physicians reported on Friday the death of a kid who suffered from coronavirus. According to a doctor in Valhalla, where the kid was being treated, the child had suffered from neurological complications due to the syndrome.
