Growing up, we all learn that we need to be kind to one another.

Unfortunately, we sometimes get reminded that others can be ignorant. Comments and gestures from those people, as a result, hurt us greatly.

So, it’s relieving to see someone standing up to such thoughtless actions.

On her post on Facebook, Shannon Morgan Daughtry shares her husband’s story of standing up to his coworkers.

“My husband, Dustin, was at work yesterday, sitting at a big lunch table of about 15 people.
These are all guys that he waves hello to but doesn’t really know on a personal level.
Anyway, one of the guys starts telling the whole group a story about a Halloween party that he attended his past weekend.”

“The guy says ‘OMG, my brother came to the party and had the best costume. He went as a RETARD! Oh man, it was hilarious!

“My husband was totally taken aback and just sat there pretty stunned for a moment while he gathered his thoughts. Meanwhile, some of the guys were laughing at the story, while some were just listening,” wrote Shannon.

At that point, Dustin smiled and asked the guy, ‘Well, wait, what does a retard look like?’
When the guy replied that he didn’t know, Dustin took out his phone and pulled up a picture of his daughter.

When he showed his daughter Raegan’s picture, all the guys at the table complimented on how cute she was.

That’s when Dustin told the storyteller that “She has Down syndrome. So, I’m sure you can imagine that I don’t appreciate this costume conversation. I’m just wondering, is she what a retard looks like to you?”

You can imagine the reaction from the guys at the lunch table.
The whole place went quiet, while the guy struggled to come up with an answer.

Even though it must have been difficult and uncomfortable for Dustin, he managed to explain the importance of choosing words.

Whereas comments like these may easily be regarded as a joke, it can be offensive to others.
And Shannon’s post sums up this point perfectly.

She wrote, “I’ve said it a thousand times. There are so many words in the dictionary that you can use in place of the ‘R’ word.
Please, for Raegan’s sake, consider using a different one.

Let’s all be mindful of the words we choose, and SHARE this post with your friends and family to let them know about this as well.
