A pair of raccoons broke into a bank and led the authorities on a ten-minute chase.

The bizarre burglary took place in Redwood City, California, where two cunning raccoons found their way into a Chase Bank building only to steal cookies from the employees.

As one of the customers allegedly told ABC 5, they initially thought that there was a plush toy on the table before realizing that it was actually a live, moving animal.

Once the staff became aware of the cute burglars, the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA were called and asked to help resolve the situation.

“Since the bank robbers were masked bandits of the wildlife kind, we were indeed the appropriate responders,” the organization’s communications manager, Buffy Martin Tarbox, said.

“After about ten minutes of chasing the raccoons around the bank, we were finally able to safely shoo them outside. They apparently didn’t want to leave the bank.”

As Tarbox admitted, this was the first time they were called to deal with a bank break-in.

“There were several broken ceiling tiles, and the masked bandits knocked papers around and even a computer over,” the communications manager added.

“Thankfully the raccoons were not injured during their morning escapade, and to our knowledge they didn’t abscond with any money.”

According to Tarbox, paw prints found on the tree outside the bank suggest that the thieves used the tree to reach the building’s roof. Once on the roof, the raccoons presumably made their way into the bank through its ventilation system.
