After the death of George Floyd in America, Black Lives Matter protesters took to London streets and vowed to have more demonstrations across the United Kingdom.
Protests over Floyd’s death escalated in at least 30 US cities, with people showing up with rocks and bricks, throwing them at police officers. Some women even got hit by stones that were aimed at cops.
Cars and buses traveling along Rye Lane were forced to stop and wait as hundreds of Black Lives Matter protesters took over the main road.
Aside from London, protests have also been lined up for Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff, and Birmingham.
Videos shared on social media show people shouting “no justice, no peace” as demonstrators descended on the street.
Another clip shows protestors shouting: “The UK is not innocent!”
Many of them were seen holding signs reading ‘solidarity’ and ‘BLM’ while others seemed to call for riots. One sign read: “RIOT is the language of the unheard.”
Most of the protesters marching were seen without face masks and not adhering to social distancing rules.
The demonstrators vowed to march on Trafalgar Square in central London where they will kneel. A banner from the event reads: “We are doing this to place pressure on the American government and show that this is a world wide issue.”
Floyd’s death followed that of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed black man who was shot by two white police officers in Georgia, and 26-year-old Breonna Taylor, a black woman who was shot by police in Louisville.
The incidents have rekindled tensions between the black community and law enforcement in the US after officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck until he passed out and died.
