A 31-year-old protester has been jailed for two years after pushing a female police officer in Parliament Square, leaving her with serious neck and back injuries.
Jamie Dewing joined protesters in London on June 13 as activists assembled claiming they were keeping statues safe.
But a shocking video from the protest shows a confrontation between police and violent demonstrators in Parliament Square.
Police officers were trying to control people near the statue of Nelson Mandela when Dewing pushed the female officer, who fell down the steps.
She was left with severe injuries to her neck and back.
Surveillance footage also shows the 31-year-old spitting at police officers while throwing things including a metal barrier.
According to reports, Dewing had traveled from North Yorkshire to London to participate in the demonstration.
He initially denied the claims but authorities had collected enough evidence against him.
“Dewing assaulted an officer who was only trying to protect a member of the public,” said Detective Constable Nicky Dixon.
“This officer braved a hostile crowd to carry out the rescue of someone who was vulnerable.
“Having come to the woman’s aid, the officer was moving away when Dewing assaulted her. There is no excuse for this or his later actions, it was just thuggery.”
Dixon added: “I’d like to thank Cleveland Police for their help in identifying Dewing. When arrested he initially denied that he was responsible, but officers had gathered extensive evidence.
“When faced with the overwhelming evidence against him, he pleaded guilty and has rightly been sent to prison.
“As part of our investigation into recent disorder, we have released many images of people we would like to speak with in connection with this incident.
“I would urge everyone to please take a few minutes to look through these images in the news and on social media and, if you identify anyone you recognise, please let us know who they are.”
