The Black Lives Matter supporter who had organized a rally in California has been charged with attempted murder after plowing her car into a group of counter-protesters and running over a woman’s head in the process.
40-year-old Tatiana Turner was behind the organization of a Black Lives Matter rally that took place in Yorba Linda, California, on Saturday.
During the protest, her group was confronted by a large gathering of counter-protesters whom Turner reportedly plowed into with her car.
“She positioned her vehicle to be used as a backup weapon and she used that vehicle as a deadly weapon, willing to injure and kill those who stood in her way,” District Attorney Todd Spitzer claimed.
As the defendant’s lawyer, Ludlow Creary II, insisted, his client rammed her car into the crowd of counter-protesters in fear for her life after seeing people with guns blocking her path.
In addition, Newser reported that the BLM rally organizer attempted to get help from the police but “got the runaround” when she called 911.
“Sheriff’s deputies on scene didn’t do anything,” Creary added. “There were actions that caused her to become fearful for her life and that’s when she accelerated. She wasn’t trying to hit anybody. She wasn’t trying to hurt anybody.”
After Turner ran her car over a woman’s head and rammed into a man who broke his leg in the process, she has been apprehended by the police and charged with attempted murder.
As Orange County Sheriff’s Department suggested after reviewing the footage from the scene of the showdown, it didn’t appear that the suspect was in any kind of danger when she plowed into the counter-protesters with her vehicle.
“It did not appear from the video we’ve been able to see that there was a direct threat,” the department’s spokesperson, Carrie Braun, said.
“I wasn’t there and wasn’t sitting in the vehicle. I don’t want to say what she could, would or should have done. Clearly, any time an incident like this occurs it’s tragic for everybody involved.”
Following the incident, Turner has reportedly pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. She is currently being held on $1 million bail.
