A simple but confusing math problem has been going viral and people can’t agree on what the correct answer is.
Once and for all, we’re going to put an end to the debate surrounding a viral math problem by explaining what the right answer is and why.
Before we reveal the results, however, it is your job to try and solve the problem to the best of your abilities. Look at the equation above and let us know what your answer is!
Keep in mind that getting to the right answer will require you to follow the correct order of operations. Whether you choose to follow PEMDAS, PEDMAS, or BODMAS, there is only one correct solution and the answer will always be the same if you apply the rules correctly.
If you’re done and sure that you’ve got the right answer, check out the breakdown of the problem below!
STEP 1: Since there are no brackets/parentheses and exponents/orders in the equation, this means that we start off with multiplication and division. Since the two have the SAME priority, simply start from the left and move to the right.
7 + 7 ÷ 7 + 7 × 7 – 7 =
7 + 1 + 49 – 7
Note: Keep in mind that though there are no brackets/parentheses, division and multiplication ALWAYS have higher priority than addition and subtraction. It is INCORRECT to assume that 7 + 7 ÷ 7 = 14 ÷ 7 because the second and the third 7 have a division symbol in between, meaning they have to be evaluated first.
STEP 2: Solve the equation by adding/subtracting the remaining numbers. Since addition and subtraction have the same priority, you can do this step in any order.
7 + 1 + 49 – 7 =
8 + 49 – 7 =
57 – 7 =
The correct answer is 50!
