As people around the globe desperately search for ways to spend their days, Netflix’s already large viewership ballooned to unprecedented levels.
The most popular show for those who are netflix and chilling? Over the hundred of popular tv shows and movies, an idiosyncratic relationship of people involved in a zoo where you can cuddle tigers has been the center of attention.
However, the history of private zoos goes much beyond the current Netflix sensation. From the old aristocrats who groomed the most exotic animals, private zoos have been present for much longer than many think.
William Randolph Hearst is a notable example. Artfully captured by Orson Welles in his classic “Citizen Kane”, the real Mr. Kane was as special in real life as Welles’ legendary performance.
The whole compound which included private zoos to Egyptian treasures was named Hearst castle. At its peak, it was the largest private zoo in the United States.
After his death, the remnants of Hearst castle have been transformed into a tourist spot. A popular itinerary includes a trip to the nearby fields where the descendants of the zebra Hearst bred frolics in the fields.
That is not to say that all privately run zoos are riddled with troubles. Some are operated expertly by those with a deep affection for the animals that they exhibit.
Phoenix Zoo, located in Phoenix, AZ, is a great example of a highly-regarded zoo that is privately owned. Since opening its doors in 1962, the zoo has been recognized by major zoo and aquarium associations for their professional operation.
Unfortunately, not all private facilities are operated with the professionalism of Phoenix zoo. A particular issue is the hands-on experience that many of the private zoos provide for their viewers.
Experts warn that these physical interactions between humans and animals are dangerous for both. Even animals born under captivity have wild instincts within them. They could turn into the wild beasts they are at any time.
Despite the surprising abundance of private zoos, regulations regarding them are scarce to find. The only real pertinent law is the Animal Welfare Act that was signed back in 1966. In at least 5 US states, the operator of a zoo does not need any license of any sort to operate zoos.
