An Ohio death row prisoner who survived 18 lethal injection attempts has passed away at the age of 64.
Romell Broom had spent 25 years on death row after he was convicted of kidnapping, raping, and murdering Tryna Middleton, 14, in 1984.
He pleaded innocence but a DNA test did not clear his name. His date of execution was scheduled for September 2009.
Broom was bounded to a table but multiple attempts to execute him through lethal injection failed.
He even tried to help the officials by flexing his fingers and moving his arm up and down. However, they could not access a suitable vein.
The team then tried different positions but their strategies just caused him even more pain until the execution was postponed indefinitely.
Broom was found lifeless on December 28, 2020, after suffering from suspected Covid. He was 64.
According to reports, his lifeless body had many cuts from attempted injections as officials could not find a vein into which they could inject the lethal mixture of midazolam, pancuronium bromide, and potassium chloride.
Corrections officers put him on their ‘Covid probable list’ of inmates suspected to have passed away from coronavirus.
More than 17 death row prisoners in four states have passed away from Covid, including the oldest condemned prisoner in Ohio, James Frazier, who died at the age of 79 in November.
One person commented: “If one method doesn’t work a lead pill should suffice.”
Another wrote: “Finally he got his death sentence. And it was about time.”
A third said: “Oh, well. Why didn’t they wipe that smarmy look off his face by electrocuting him instead? Rest in Peace to his poor victim and love to her family xx”
