35 million people are being held in penal institutions around the world. Since 2000, the total number of the male population has increased by 18 percent while the female serving time has grown by 50 percent.
Prison cells differ from one country to another. For example, prisoners in Norway have access to video games, DVDs, and musical instruments without bars in their rooms. But in Malawi, a normal cell is packed with at least 30 people. These conditions show how countries treat criminals but also raise the question of whether prison is meant to rehabilitate or punish them.
