The Texas-based student of Berry Miller Junior High was allegedly given three options by the teacher when he arrived in school with the forbidden hairstyle.

As Juelz Washington who shaved his hair in the shape of letter ‘M’ explained, the assistant principal told him to color the shaved parts using a marker or face disciplinary action. Afraid of the potential sanctions, the boy agreed.

“His only options were to go to ISS or get his head colored. They did not call to inform me at all.

“The first picture is the day of the incident. The last two pictures are yesterday. It’s still in his head days later.”

Soon enough, the post went viral and other parents began showing support for Juelz and called the teacher’s actions “unacceptable.”

Responding to the outrage with a statement, Pearland independent school district condemned the assistant principal’s actions but reminded everyone that the dress code should be observed.

“Pearland ISD is extremely disappointed to learn of a situation that occurred at Berry Miller Junior High,” they wrote.

“A student recently arrived at school with a haircut against the district dress code. Pearland ISD’s dress code states: ‘Hair must be neat, clean and well groomed. Extreme hairstyles such as carvings, mohawks, spikes, etc. are not allowed.’

“A campus administrator mishandled disciplinary action by giving the student options including notifying his mother, disciplinary consequences or filling in the shape of the hair carving with a marker.

“This latter practice is not condoned by the district and does not align with appropriate measures for dress code violations. The campus administrator is currently on administrative leave. Further action is forthcoming.

“District administration has contacted the student’s family to express our sincerest apology and extreme disappointment in this situation, which does not fall in line with the values of Pearland ISD.”
