Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, urged furloughed workers and students to join the #PickForBritain campaign.

The campaign has been initiated as a response to cope with the shortage of labor that the global pandemic has caused.

Usually, most of the agricultural work is done by seasonal migrant workers who come to Britain during harvest season. As suggested by their name, these workers are hired for a short limited contract just to help during the high season.

However, Covid-19 has virtually stopped any entry or exit of labor forces for the United Kingdom and all other countries. Because so much of its work has been outsourced to migrant workers, experts worry that the labor shortage in the farms may lead to supply shortages for British consumers.

This is why the 71 year old royal urged Britons to help with the “unglamorous” work of the farmers. After acknowledging how many aspects of life that we used to know have been disrupted because of the pandemic, Prince Charles said that “an army of people” are needed for the harvest season.

He likened this movement to the similarly difficult but essential work that the British Land Army did during World War II. With most of the men conscripted to the military, women and children formed the Land Army and took care of most of the agriculture during the war.

The Duke of Cornwall continued his address by saying if Britons do not show up to the fields to help, tonnes of fruits and vegetables will be put to waste as an increasing number of families worry about putting food on the table.

He ended by saying that even though this work will not be the fanciest work, it will be one of the most important contributions that anyone can make to help the nation through a global pandemic.

Back in March of this year, Prince Charles had tested positive for the coronavirus. Although it was reported that he had never been in serious condition, he still isolated and received the necessary treatments with his physician before he resumed his normal duties.
