President Biden has confirmed that Donald Trump likely won’t receive intelligence briefings as he suggested the former president can’t be trusted.
According to the POTUS, his predecessor’s “erratic behavior” means that he can’t be trusted with sensitive information because he could “slip and say something.”
Biden opened up about his thoughts on Trump and intelligence briefings during his appearance on CBS Evening News on Friday. After he was asked by the host whether Trump should receive intelligence briefings, which former presidents are often granted, Biden said:
“I think not … Because of his erratic behavior unrelated to the insurrection.”
As the POTUS insisted, there’s “no need” for Trump to have access to highly-sensitive information now that he’s out of office.
“I would rather not speculate out loud. I just think there is no need for him to have that intelligence briefing?” Biden added.
“What value is giving him an intelligence briefing? What impact does he have at all, other than he might slip and say something?”
The decision of whether or not their predecessors should be entitled to intelligence briefings after leaving office lies entirely on the sitting president. While it has long been a tradition for former presidents to receive such briefings in order to allow them to continue assisting their nation in their own ways, Biden could break the cycle if he goes forward with his plan.
While intelligence briefings provide former presidents with access to sensitive information, highly-classified information remains reserved for the sitting president.
Biden, however, will not be alone in breaking tradition if he bans the 45th president from receiving briefings. Trump broke another cycle himself as he became the first president in over 150 years to refuse to attend the inauguration of his successor.
