Premature twins who were born at just 22 weeks back in December are thriving and defying the odds several months after their birth.

We have first heard of babies Makenzie and Makayla back in December when their North Carolina mum, Tracey Hernandez, was told by the doctors that they have no chance of survival.

Despite the terrifying odds, the twins, who were born in their amniotic sacs weighing just little over one pound each, are now thriving following four months at the NICU.

According to Tracey, her brave babies were able to survive the ordeal due to breathing on their own after their birth. As she and her partner, Anthony Hope, now hope, the tots will soon be able to join them at their home.

“I am so lucky and I know it’s an absolute miracle. I feel blessed. It has been a long and draining journey so far but we are nearly there and the end is so close now,” Tracey said in an interview with the Metro.

“They have both amazed me and they continue to amaze me. They are a blessing and I am so proud to call myself their mom.”

To assist the family in paying for the medical expenses, Tracey’s aunt, Susan Lords, started a fundraiser that, as of this writing, reached $3,500 in donations.

“My niece is the primary breadwinner of the family. She is an LPN for special needs individuals that requires that she spend significant time away from her family which, at this time, is just not an option. In order for her to be able to stay with her twins, Tracey needs to extend her maternity leave,” Susan wrote on GoFundMe.

“The family is asking for your donations no matter the amount. Let’s come together as one and support this family in this trying time!”
