A pregnant nurse who was diagnosed with COVID-19 has passed away just days after her baby was delivered via emergency C-section.
The tragic death occurred at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital in England where 28-year-old Mary Agyapong, who worked as a nurse, was admitted after experiencing symptoms of the novel coronavirus.
Due to the delicate nature of the young nurse’s pregnancy and her worsening health condition, the doctors decided to perform an emergency C-section to save the baby’s life.
Unfortunately, the 28-year-old died on Easter Sunday, just five days after her daughter, also named Mary, joined her family.
After Agyapong’s premature passing, the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust paid a tribute to the nurse and called her “a fantastic nurse.”
“Mary worked here for five years and was a highly valued and loved member of our team, a fantastic nurse and a great example of what we stand for in this trust,” Chief Executive David Carter expressed.
“She tested positive for Covid-19 after being tested on April 5 and was admitted to the hospital on April 7. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Mary’s family and friends at this sad time.”
Following the nurse’s death, her friend and colleague started a GoFundMe page that, as of this writing, raised over $70,000 for the heartbroken family.
“I am raising this funds for her immediate family; her husband, AJ and her baby girl little Mary, who was born at the time of her demise. It is humane for us to take care of them in every way we can during this heavy and trying time,” the page reads.
“The funds raised would be a starting point to support them financially. And any amount you are led to contribute within your capacity will be greatly appreciated to support the family as she would have reached out to anyone in need without hesitation.”
