Donna and Vince were thrilled when a sonogram revealed they were having twins — but when Lucy and Maria were born in 1997, their parents and doctors were taken by surprise!

Though the twins were born on the same day, to the same mother and father, Maria has caramel complexion, brown eyes and curly brown hair. Lucy has has ivory skin, ginger-red hair and blue eyes.

Their father Vince is white and their mother Donna is half-Jamaican. They had three children already before they gave birth to the twins. And while the older siblings all have similar skin tones, Lucy and Maria were somehow born at complete opposite ends of the spectrum from each other.

When the girls were little, their mother would dress them in similar outfits like other twins, but even still, nobody believed that there were twins. Some friends even demanded to see their birth certificates!

As Lucy and Maria grew older, they had their fair share of odd glances, rude comments and bullying from their peers, but it’s only brought them closer together. Today, their story has fascinated and inspired millions of people all over the world.

At first glance, you’d think these girls were best friends and not twin sisters. Luckily for them, they are both!
