18-year-old Lizzie Mason and Jaedyn Overbury have allegedly been eating nothing but dry toast for three days after spending their $300 benefits that they receive monthly for rent, transport, and junk food.

Around four months ago, the couple moved into a YMCA homeless shelter to save on expenses. After Jaedyn was signed off from his job that included stacking shelves due to anxiety, however, things have taken a turn for the worse as the couple began receiving minimal benefits.

While they didn’t expect much, Jaedyn and Lizzie were thrilled after kind strangers began responding and providing them with fruits, eggs, milk products, canned food, etc.

To their surprise, the couple also received a lot of advice on how to make use of vouchers and which food banks to pay a visit from people who were in their situation.

“I was amazed by the response we got, we didn’t expect it at all,” Jaedyn said.

Recently, the pair has also moved out of the homeless shelter into a shared house. Since then, they’ve been struggling since Jaedyn was diagnosed with GAD and signed off sick.

Despite doctors telling Jaedyn that he shouldn’t work, however, he is actively looking for a job to be able to support his family.

“The universal rate for being signed off is awful to live on so I’m still looking for part-time work, even when advised by the doctors not to be in work for the time being,” he added.

“I struggle quite badly with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and I also have problems with my chest and breathing which makes physical tasks difficult, still waiting on x-ray and blood results to figure out why my breathing is so limited.

“I can barely make it up a set of stairs without gasping for air so any physical job wouldn’t work.”
