The doctors treating the patients have started laying them on stomachs to help them breathe. This technique is known as prone positioning.

This practice is specifically effective for patients with the virus, which attacks their respiratory system, as it improves oxygen levels in their blood by at least 10%.

The regional director for the crucial care of Northwell Health, Dr. Mangala Narasimhan, said that they were saving lives with the technique without any doubt.

He added that it was such an easy thing to do and they had witnessed remarkable improvement. He further noted that they could see it happening in the case of all the patients.

Dr. Kathryn Hibbert, the director of medical ICU at MGH (Massachusetts General Hospital) also added that once a doctor sees it function, they would want to perform it more because its effect is seen almost immediately.

Coronavirus is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which infects the upper respiratory tract from the nose to the throat’s back and can spread through lungs and trachea, causing symptoms like shortness of breath and coughing.

In serious cases, it can cause pneumonia along with chest pains, chills, high fever, etc. Sometimes, the lung damage is so severe that the coronavirus patient can not breathe on their own and require a respirator to obtain oxygen.

Laying the patients on stomachs has been an effective treatment despite the severity of the disease. However, it comes with a cost.

A ventilated patient lying on the stomach would need more sedation comparatively if they were made to lie on their back.

For those who are not in the ICU, the prone position is usually less comfortable and patients have difficulty keeping themselves occupied for a lot of time. So, Dr. Hibbert asks the patient off the ventilator to lie on the stomach only for a few hours at once.
