Pope Francis Delivered Blessings As He Walked Through Deserted Streets Of Rome


The Pope was pictured defying government advice on coronavirus outbreak by delivering his blessings as he walked through deserted streets of Rome.

Before taking to the abandoned streets of Vatican City, Pope Francis had delivered a blessing from a balcony on St Peter’s Square which is closed amid the pandemic.

Later on, the pope visited the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore before walking down the street to St Marcello al Corso.

According to Matteo Bruni, a spokesperson for the Vatican, the 83-year-old, who had recently been struggling with a cold, walked from one location to another “as if on a pilgrimage.”

The ‘pilgrimage’ followed just moments after the Vatican announced that ceremonies during the Holy Week will take place whereas the attendance will be limited.

“As far as Holy Week liturgical celebrations are concerned, I can specify that all are confirmed,” Bruni added.

“As things stand, under study are the ways they would be carried out and who would participate while respecting the security measures put in place to avoid spread of the coronavirus.”

According to the spokesperson, channels such as radio, TV, and online media will be utilized to allow people to watch streamed ceremonies.

“Until April 12 the General Audiences and the Angelus presided over by the Holy Father will be available only in live streaming on the official Vatican News website,” Vatican media added.
