Police have warned over candies being sold online as some are laced with ecstasy and cannabis.
Parents and guardians should be ‘aware’ of the rise in youths possessing ‘edibles’ disguised as sweets, said North Yorkshire Police.
The ‘Nerd Rope’ treats look exactly like the popular children’s candies but they have a ‘super potent blend’ of drugs.
One investigation said that teens are ordering candies with up to 6000mg of cannabis online for as low as $55. These ‘treats’ can be purchased in different drug potencies and colors and are easy to mistake for Nerd Rope.
“We want to make parents and carers aware that we have seen a rise in young people being in possession of drug-infused sweets known as ‘edibles’,” North Yorkshire PC Lauren Green told The Sun.
“They can look very similar to well-known sweets such as Haribo, Smarties and chocolate bars. Edibles can be laced with illegal drugs such as cannabis and MDMA.
“Unregulated sweets like these are dangerous as we don’t know what levels of drugs they contain.”
This comes after authorities urged parents to be more vigilant after weapons and drugs bust on Friday. Police raided three homes in Harrogate and seized cash, drugs, money, weapons, and cannabis-infused Nerds.
A 24-year-old man, an 18-year-old man, and three teenage boys were arrested by police.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Police seized what they suspect as cannabis-infused Nerd sweets and are warning parents to be alert to the possibility that young people in the area may have bought them.”
Just last month, police in Bradford also confiscated a huge supply of drug-laced Nerds candies.
