After 12-hours of exhausting shift, Jose Arturo Vera, who is an ER nurse, was eager to get home.
But when he reached the police roadblock at the entrance of the Monclova town in Coahuila state, an officer enquired where he was coming from.
When Vera told her that he was a nurse, she asked him to turn around. However, a soldier nearby waved him to go through, and Vera drove to his house.
Soon a patrol car appeared at Vera’s driveway, and the officers started taking pictures of his house. It made Vera furious, and in response, he started taking pictures of the police officers.
This was enough to aggravate the officers as they pushed Vera against the car and started hitting him on arms, knees, and shoulders. It created chaos when his children and neighbors begged the officers to stop hitting him.
Paying no heed to their requests, the police officers handcuffed Vera and took him to the police station.
While in the US, Italy, and Spain, people have been paying tribute to medical officials, in many parts of Mexico, medical professionals are targets of discrimination and abuse.
The head of nursing for the Mexican Social Security Institute, Fabiana Zepeda, said that it is hurtful to see what is being done to the medical staff. She added that they are not the ones walking around with diseases or getting anyone sick.
On the one hand, such attacks are happening, and on the other, the federal government is trying to get retired doctors and nurses to join the workforce again. Moreover, on Tuesday, medical authorities announced that Mexico had entered phase three of the coronavirus pandemic.
Due to the injuries, Vera has not returned to work this week. He has also filed a complaint with Coahuila State Human Rights Commission.
More than 21 nurses throughout Mexico have been assaulted verbally and physically since the pandemic has begun. In fact, one of the nurses was even thrown bleach at her when she was walking back to her home.
