Officers have released videos of a shooting incident a man accused of stabbing a 77-year-old man in a grocery store during an argument over a face mask was shot by a police officer after attempting to attack her with knives.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon in Eaton County after the suspect stabbed an elderly man at a grocery store, according to police Lt. Brian Oleksyk.
The deputy saw the suspect’s vehicle in a residential neighborhood but the man advanced on her, forcing her to pull the trigger.
Oleksyk said that the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Sean Ruis, jumped out of his car with multiple weapons in hand and tried to attack the deputy.
According to body camera videos released by the Sherriff’s Office and neighborhood security footage, the deputy, who has been on the force for more than two decades, stepped back and repeatedly ordered the suspect to drop his weapon.
“Drop the weapon! Drop the weapon!” the officer yelled.
However, Ruis ignored her commands and walked towards her while showing multiple knives and a screwdriver, forcing the officer to open fire on him.
Eaton County Sheriff Tom Reich said in a press conference: “It’s very unfortunate she had to use her weapon, but she had to save her life. She had to use deadly force. She did it properly.”
Reich said in a statement: “Our thoughts and prayers are for the full recovery of the victim who was stabbed at the Quality Dairy and for his family, and are with our Deputy who was subsequently violently attacked.
“They are also with the family of Mr. Ruis who was killed in this senseless, tragic incident.”
