No matter how good you are at your job or how much you’re enjoying it, there will always come a time that you will need to retire.

Retirement doesn’t necessarily have to be because of old age because there are other reasons that can cause retirement.

Athletes, for example, may need to retire because of an injury that is either life-threatening or simply prevents them from performing at their former level even after the injury has healed.

Either way, it’s simply the cycle of life that even the best moments have to end in order for another chapter in life to begin.

This is true not only for humans but for dogs as well. Dogs have worked hand-in-hand with their human buddies from the times of our ancestors and little has changed today.

The way dogs work with humans may be different, such as the way service dogs help disabled people navigate daily life, but the bond that they share with the owners stays the same.point 399 |

And nowhere is this bond stronger, perhaps, than with K-9 units.point 54 | After all, the very nature of their job puts a K-9 team in high-risk and life-threatening situations and nothing forges a bond like the risk of death does.point 182 | 1

And when you have a bond as strong as that, letting go and moving on can get quite emotional as the following video demonstrates.

Senior Special Agent Bryan Schaffer of the BNSF Railway Police has worked with his K-9 partner Faust for the past 9 years. However, 9 years is a long time in dog years and it was finally time for Faust to retire.

The video starts with Schaffer making his final radio call and the dispatcher broadcasts the department’s thanks to Faust who has faithfully served for all those years. Schaffer can’t help but get a little emotional now that the last duty shift with his furry buddy was now coming to an end and Faust seems to also know what’s up because he’s whining the whole time, letting everyone know that he’s also sad at having to retire.

It was truly a special bond that they shared and it’s no surprise that their parting would be emotional. However, retirement doesn’t mean the end of life, simply the start of a new chapter. Faust definitely earned his keep and at least he can look forward to more relaxing days that don’t involve him having to risk his life.

After so many years of faithful service, this dog deserves to spend his remaining years in peace and just having fun!
