Play City Organized A Second Party For The Girl Who Invited 10 Friends But Only 2 Showed Up


Hundreds of people gathered into Play City in Chula Vista to give a young girl a second chance at a birthday party.

The 8-year-old Ashley had a birthday planned at Play City at 10 a.m. with 10 friends but she left devastated when only 2 of her friends arrived to attend the party.

Her parents Edna and David Gotcher took their daughter to Play City before the weekend to celebrate her 8th birthday. The girl invited 10 friends to celebrate the day but only two showed up.

“We waited and waited and waited and like two people showed up,” Edna said. David added, “She took it very well and she made the best of it and I think that’s one of the best things about her she makes the best out of any situation.”

“We got a couple of texts that said, ‘we are sorry we got traffic, something came up, my daughter is sick,’” said Ashley’s mother, Edna Gotcher.

The staff noticed the failed party and they decided to make Ashley’s day. Play city started organizing things and planned a new party for the girl.

Area businesses donated food, desserts, snacks, goodies, a unicorn cake and piñata. There was a table full of wrapped presents and dolls all for Ashley.

“I can’t say thank you enough for how thankful we are,” said David Gotcher, Ashley’s father.

The party was free for anyone at Play City Friday night for the birthday party. “Thank you everybody for coming,” said Ashley.

“Being a mom of an 8 year old I couldn’t fathom something like that happening to me,” Alita Fernandez, Play City marketing manager and organizer, said.

“We had businesses pitching in we had people random people that I had never me,”

“[We’re] feeling blessed feeling thankful feeling gracious humbled by the outpouring from the community,” David Gotcher says.

“I never expected this outcome it feels like I’m dreaming,” Edna Gotcher said.
