A plastic surgeon has been sentenced to almost two years in jail after a female patient slipped into a coma.
It was in 2018 when Karolina Sakrisyan went to the clinic of Dr. Gulnara Shah in Moscow, Russia.
The nose job procedure was to correct a deviated septum, which the woman said made it hard for her to properly breathe.
Karolina also asked to have a hump removed to give her nose a more curved shape.
Reports reveal that plastic surgeon Gevorg Stepanyan performed the operation as the female patient chose him herself based on several positive patient reviews and experience.
But during the operation, Karolina started bleeding nonstop and clinic staff frantically called emergency services.
She was rushed to a hospital where she slipped into a coma for 9 days.
A criminal case was then launched after the incident and investigators searched the clinic. According to local media, the clinic didn’t even have a medical license to perform plastic surgery services.
Investigators also did not find necessary medical equipment and clinic employees couldn’t provide round-the-clock monitoring of their patients.
Dr. Gevorg Stepanyan immediately fled Russia and is now on the international wanted list while clinic owner Gulnara Shah was on house arrest.
Shah was eventually found guilty and he was sentenced to one year and ten months behind bars. In addition, he was ordered to pay RUB 560,000 ($7,607) to the patient as compensation.
Karolina’s mother Marina said in a 2018 interview: “She is so beautiful, she is a stunner. She didn’t need to do any plastic surgery. Early in the morning the anaesthetist came. I described what happened and asked why the nurse gave so many pills.
“He said it was his prescription after the surgery,” the mother added. “I will never forgive myself for letting her do this surgery.”
