Over 50 People Treated After Plane Dumped Fuel Across The City During Emergency Landing


Dozens of people, including many children, were treated for minor injuries and irritation caused by a plane that dumped jet fuel on the school playground during an emergency landing.

The incident occurred in Los Angeles where a Delta airlines jet was forced to turn around and make an emergency landing at the Los Angeles International Airport due to an engine issue according to Delta statement obtained by DailyMail.com.

During the landing, the Boeing 777 discharged excess jet fuel to reduce the total weight of the aircraft and make it safe for landing.

However, the fuel was dropped in a populated area of the city, whereas more than fifty children from several schools are believed to have suffered minor irritation.

The incident also affected 20 school kids and 11 adults at the Park Avenue Elementary School where the fuel landed on the playground.

Besides the Park Avenue Elementary, students and adults were also treated at Graham Elementary, San Gabriel Elementary, and Tweedy Elementary.

“70 firefighters and paramedics on-scene and committed to providing care for those injured. FFs working to confirm substance dropped by aircraft, although initial reports stated smell of jet fuel in area,” the fire department reported after the incident.

As the school district added in a statement about the effects of the incident on the Park Avenue Elementary, “students and staff were on the playground at the time and may have been sprayed by fuel or inhaled fumes.”

According to the reports, all injuries caused by emergency fuel discharge were minor and no one had to be taken to the hospital.

The incident was also confirmed by Delta airlines.

“Shortly after takeoff, Flight 89 from LAX to Shanghai experienced an engine issue requiring the aircraft to return to LAX. The aircraft landed safely after an emergency fuel release to reduce landing weight,” the spokesperson told The Daily Mail.
