Free-Range Pig Started Huge Farm Fire With Its Own ‘Spicy’ Poo

A free-range pig started a huge farm at four pigpens in Bramham after it pooped.

Firefighters were called out to a scene after one pig pooped out copper wires that started the blaze. It turned out that the hungry piggy ate a pedometer and then excreted it out.

The device then reacted with the pigpen’s contents, setting off the fire.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue wrote on Twitter: “Should be an oink not a tweet. Tadcaster and Knaresbororough fire crews attended a fire to 4 pigpens near Bramham. No pigs harmed. Cause of fire attributed to a battery powered pedometer carried by one of the pigs (to prove it was free-range), which was eaten by the other.

“After nature had taken its course, it’s believed that the copper from the batteries reacted with the pigpen’s contents and in conjunction with dry bedding, ignited burning approx. 75sqm of hay. A hose reel was used to extinguish the fire and save the bacon.”

Luckily, no people or pigs were harmed in the fire.

This is not the first time an animal caused a fire. Last year, a tortoise knocked over a heat lamp, which fell on bedding and started a blaze.

A photo of the angry looking tortoise was shared on Twitter by Essex Fire Service, who save the fella from the fire.

“This 45 year old tortoise might look angry but it’s his lucky day. After he set his bedding alight his neighbour heard the smoke alarm and called us. Our on-call crews left their families to go extinguish the fire and gave him a very merry Christmas,” the Essex Fire Service tweeted.

Gary Wait, the Watch Manager of Great Dunmow Fire Station, also said: “The fire started after the tortoise knocked a heat lamp onto its bedding, which then caught alight.

“This incident shows just how important it is to have smoke alarms on every level of your home – even if you’re not home they will alert anyone close by to the first sign of fire.

“This tortoise has had a very lucky Christmas Day – he is 45 years young and will now hopefully continue to live a long and happy life thanks to working smoke alarms.”
