According to the reports, the lungs in the pictures belonged to a 52-year-old chain smoker who had been suffering from several lung diseases.

While healthy lungs are pink in color, the man’s tar-tainted organ appeared completely black due to the killer habit that he maintained for decades. In addition, the victim’s lungs were severely inflamed due to tobacco residue forming blockages over the years.

The hospital shared the video in which they showed the blackened lungs under the following bold caption: “Do you still have the courage to smoke?”

Needless to say, the viewers were shocked upon seeing the “best anti-smoking ad ever,” whereas some smokers even vowed never to lit another cigarette again.

Speaking of the heavy smoker’s case, lung transplant surgeon Dr. Chen said:

“The patient didn’t undergo a CT scan before his death. He was declared brain dead, and his lungs were donated shortly after that. Initial oxygenation index tests were okay, but when we harvested the organs, we realized we wouldn’t be able to use them.

“We Chinese love smoking. It would be impractical to say that we wouldn’t accept the lungs of all smokers, but there are strict standards.

“[We accept] lungs from people under 60 years of age who have only recently died, minor infections in the lungs and relatively clean X-rays are also acceptable. If the above conditions are met, we would consider transplanting the lungs.”

However, as Dr. Chen added, the man’s lungs were severely inflamed and expanded and far beyond the point where they could be used for anything.
