But did you know that salt can also be a beautiful masterpiece? In fact, there is a salt mine in Poland with underground chapels, chandeliers, and lakes, and it is out of this world.

The Wieliczka salt mine in Poland is so huge that people can only visit two percent of the labyrinth.  It features 2,000 chambers, underground lakes, and chapels equipped with sparkling chandeliers.

The -1072-ft salt labyrinth’s history dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was called the Great Salt or the Magnum Sal.

It was the biggest source of salt in the country during the 13th century, and today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Poland.

Miners make sure that the salt mine is a safe place to visit. They protect the historic parts of the mine and manage water leaks. There are also many renovations to be done to corridors, mine shafts and historic chambers as around two million people visit the complex site per year.
