The United Nations has described the conflict as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The UN envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, said the momentum to end the conflict is building.

According to Daily Mail, he told the UN Security Council that the improvements since infighting between the internationally recognized government and protesters in the country’s south are starting to ‘produce results.’

He said that the most vital sign ‘that something is changing’ is the reduction in airstrikes.

Mr. Griffiths also mentioned the cessation of drone and missile attacks on Saudi Arabia by Houthi Shiite rebels, which the group announced ‘has been sustained for a second month in a row.’

The Yemeni conflict started with the 2014 takeover of the capital Sanaa by Houthis who control most of the northern part of the country.

Fighting in the country has killed thousands of people and resulted in the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. It also left millions of people suffering from medical care shortages and food.

According to reports, the Houthis and Saudi Arabia are holding talks to end the war.

“The prospect of a break-up of the state was real and frankly terrifying,” Mr. Griffiths said. He also mentioned that during 86 days of negotiations leaders from both sides agreed to work for a greater cause.

“It should serve as a catalyst to move Yemen swiftly towards settling this conflict through political means,” he added.

One internet user commented: “It is a shame that this sort of thing is happening in the modern world. It is all because of greed and money not to mention religion.”

A third added: “That is absolutely heartbreaking. I don’t know what else to say.”
