A Photographer Took Pictures Of The Same People On The Same Street For Nine Years

Danish photographer Peter Funch loves photography and he has been clicking photographs of the same place at the same time for 9 years.

He stood at the southern corner of 42nd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue for taking pictures for 9 years. He realized that he captured the same person a few times. That finding turned into an amazing photo project named “42nd and Vanderbilt.”

These pictures have taken from 2007 to 2016 from 8:30 to 9:30 in the morning in New York City. Photographer found out that daily shooting in the same place surprises you sometimes and you see the same people repeating the same rituals over the years.

“The idea started when I was working on another project Babel Tales – some of the images were taken outside Grand Central Station, which is incredibly busy during rush hour. People come out of the station in masses, thousand of them each with their destination,” explains Peter. “The idea of finding the regulars in this chaos came up – then much later in the process finding their behaviors and rituals in their commute from a to b.”

Capturing just ordinary people going through an ordinary morning routine, rushing to work, getting ready for their busy day quite interesting sometimes.

The photographer found that people’s behavior remains the same for years, many people even have the same expression every morning. And the same glasses sticking out of their pocket the same way.

It seems that the photographer has researched these photos to point out such minor things. Some are student, mother, father or someone else, we don’t know their story who they are.

The wardrobe is a personal choice after all. We think not changing clothes or following fashion trends makes us boring or backward. Remember that one of the greatest minds of our society, Steve Jobs, wore the same black turtleneck, jeans, and New Balance sneakers every day for years and it didn’t stop him from being who he was. Maybe, some of them will follow Steve Jobs.
