Peter Fonda, best known for his role in 1969 movie Easy Rider, has passed away aged 79 after suffering from lung cancer.
Referring to the popular movie, his relatives asked the world to ‘raise a glass to freedom.’
The actor was the younger brother of Jane Fonda and son of Henry Fonda. He was survived by Margaret DeVogelere, his wife.
“I am very sad. He was my sweet-hearted baby brother. The talker of the family. I have had beautiful alone time with him these last days. He went out laughing,” his sister said in a statement.
His family said in a statement: “It is with deep sorrow that we share the news that Peter Fonda has passed away. [Peter] passed away peacefully on Friday morning, August 16 at 11.05am at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by family. The official cause of death was respiratory failure due to lung cancer.”
Fonda was planning a concert and screening of the movie on September 20 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
Roger McGuinn, John Kay, and other musicians are scheduled to perform while the film is played.
“In one of the saddest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our hearts. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy,” the family’s statement continued.
“And, while we mourn the loss of this sweet and gracious man, we also wish for all to celebrate his indomitable spirit and love of life. In honor of Peter, please raise a glass to freedom.”
Sending love and prayers to his family!
