The death toll from alcohol poisoning in Iran rose when 300 people died after drinking methanol.
They apparently came across a rumor that high proof alcohol can cure coronavirus.
According to Iranian media, over 1,000 people have been sickened after consuming methanol throughout the Islamic Republic. This is the region where alcohol is banned, and there is a high reliance on bootleggers.
In Tehran around 144 new deaths were recorded due to coronavirus on Friday, bringing the overall death toll of the country to 2,378. Additionally, over 2, 926 new cases were confirmed that brings the overall infected number of 32, 300.
Amidst the coronavirus outbreak, there has been a sea of fake remedies surfacing on the social media in the country, where people had become deeply suspicious of government after it failed to take necessary measures to curb the outbreak before it overwhelmed the nation.
Dr. Knut Erik Hovda, who studied methanol poisoning and feared that the outbreak in the country would get worse in the coming times said that the spread of the virus has been exponential. But he says that the government is even less aware of the other dangers around them.
If people keep drinking this, there will be over poisoned people to control. Iran, which is home to 80 million people, is among the places that have been badly affected by the novel coronavirus.
As of now, there is no vaccine or medicine to cure COVID-19; but scientists across the world are studying to come up with an effective medication or vaccination.
But meanwhile, the government should take all the necessary precautions to protect fake news from surfacing on social media. The Islamic Republic has over 29,000 cases with over 2,200 death from COVID-19, making it the most affected country in the Middle East.
