Some People Think Corona Beer Is Linked To Coronavirus That Took The Lives Of At Least 170


People are turning to Google to learn more about the killer coronavirus spreading from Wuhan, China.

But it was discovered that many are confusing the infection with Corona Extra.

Searches for both ‘Corona beer virus’ and ‘corona beer’ have increased since the first cases in the United States were confirmed.

According to data from Google Trends, searches for both terms spiked over 1,100 percent.

The terms were most commonly searched in California, Washington and Hawaii over the past week. Meanwhile, residents of Nebraska, Kansas and New Mexico were most likely to search for ‘beer virus.’

But it’s not only Americans who thought Corona beer was the cause.

According to GoogleTrends data, countries that searched for ‘corona beer virus’ were Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Cambodia, Australia, and Singapore.

So far, at least 170 people in China have passed away and more than 7,700 confirmed cases worldwide.

As of January, 5 cases have been confirmed in the US: Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles County and Orange County, California; Snohomish County, Washington; and Maricopa County, Arizona.

This isn’t the first time confusion has occurred with the name of a drink/food and disease. In the mid-1980s, AIDS-crisis resulted in an association with an appetite-suppressant candy Ayds.

One internet user commented: “My husband makes sure he gets his daily dose of Corona ever since this Coronavirus came out.”

Another wrote: “Founded in the 1880’s Corona was a brand of carbonated soft drink produced by Thomas & Evans Ltd in South Wales, and distributed across the United Kingdom.”

A third added: “I can actually remember the name of this virus by beer association! Let’s all drink to our HEALTH! CHEERS! SALUTE! CHIN CHIN!”
