Despite repeated warnings from the government, people hit the beach and bask in the sun, some of them in large groups.

The deputy chief constable of Devon and Cornwall, Paul Netherton, said that the force is set to deploy boats off the south coast after the area was swamped by beachgoers.

“Marine fleets from bases in Portsmouth and Plymouth will be operating along the Dorset, Devon and Cornwall coastlines ensuring people do not gather unnecessarily on beaches,” Mr. Netherton told The Times.

“They have a tannoy and can tell people to move on.”

This comes after police officers were criticized for going too far as one cop told a family they were not allowed to use their front garden amid the COVID-19 lockdown.

Dean Roberts, a Brighton resident, expressed his furious after seeing people sunbathing on the beach. He said: “I get that the weather is nice, but there are strict lockdown rules in place and we should be abiding by them, not breaking them.”

He added: “Police are going in convoys shouting through a megaphone to get people away from the sea.

“The only thing that’s gonna stop people from heading down there is if the police start handing out fines.”
