Authorities of the island of Phuket in Thailand have threatened tourists who take selfies on the beach with a death penalty.
The notorious beach which became a hotspot for tourists looking for an awesome photo with a plane in the background is located just next to the airport in southern Thailand.
While the holidaymakers care about nothing but making awesome memories, the tourists will now have to be super careful because taking a selfie on the beach could result in a death penalty.
According to the reports, the airport authorities have been left furious after taking selfies next to their premises became a trend.
While they haven’t specified how exactly taking selfies poses a danger, the airport chiefs pointed out that doing so may distract pilots and result in accidents.
For that reason, the airport promised to close off one section of the beach and anyone found in violation of the ban could face a maximum sentence of the death penalty.
“We want both the income from tourism and the aviation safety to co-exist,” Phuket International Airport Director, Wichit Kaewsaithiam, said.
“We are setting up a safety zone which will be categorized as a strictly prohibited area that does not allow people and tourists to take pictures. Aside from this area, local people and tourists can still come to take pictures as usual,” Vijit Keawsaitiam, the airport’s Deputy General Manager, added.
Another airport official advised people to “stay away” and warned them about the potential consequences of not following orders.
“People need to stay away from the restricted zone. We want to prevent any unknown object or material injuring people, or even their hearing being damaged by the noise of the aircraft’s engines,” they explained.
“The penalty for anyone failing to comply with this regulation includes the death penalty, a life sentence, or a jail term of between five to 20 years, as per the Air Aviation Act 1978.”
