A passenger has been pictured sitting on a backless seat on a plane from Luton to Geneva.
Although it wasn’t clear whether the picture had been taken after or before the aircraft had taken off, EasyJet said the seats were ‘inoperative’ for the flight.
It was Twitter user Matthew Harris who shared the photo on social media. He wrote: “#easyjet beats @Ryanair to have backless seats. @IATA @EASA this is flight 2021 Luton to Geneva. How can this be allowed. GeneveAeroport @easyJet_press @easyJe.”
The photo has been reshared almost 2,000 times since it was posted on Twitter this morning. It also received more than 1,700 likes.
EasyJet responded and asked Mathew to ‘remove the photograph so that the company could investigate.
“Hi Matthew, thanks for bringing this to our attention, before we can investigate this could I ask you to remove the photograph & then DM us more info regarding this, so we can best assist you,” the tweet said.
But Harris said that the photo is real and added that he won’t delete it.
His tweet immediately went viral and many social media users have expressed their surprise. One even said: “There is no evidence to suggest that the passenger pictured was allocated that seat for the flight. She is not wearing a seatbelt and is perched on the edge of the seat indicating she was there temporarily waiting for something to pass by in the aisle.”
Another joked: “The passengers behind have clearly paid for extra leg room. Now scoot over so they can put their feet up.”
A spokesperson for EasyJet said to LADbible: “No passengers were permitted to sit in these seats as they were inoperative awaiting repair. Safety is our highest priority and easyJet operates its fleet of aircraft in strict compliance with all safety guidelines.”
