Upset locals have slammed Greta Thunberg’s climate change rally after thousands of protesters gathered at College Green in Bristol and destroyed the grass at the park by stomping on it.
The 17-year-old renowned eco-warrior has taken to College Green in Bristol to inspire some 30,000 protesters including thousands of school children who skipped classes to attend the rally.
In her fiery speech, Ms. Thunberg blamed the governments for the “suffering and dying from the consequences of the climate and environmental emergency.”
“Nothing is being done to halt this crisis, despite all the beautiful words and promises for the elected officials. So what did we do during this crucial time? Well, I will not stand aside and watch,” Greta said as thousands of supporters were chanting her name.
“I will not be silenced while the world is on fire – will you? World leaders are behaving like children. So it falls on us to be the adults in the room. It should not be this way.
“We should not be the ones who will lead on this and tell the uncomfortable truth. Once again, they sweep their mess under the rug for us – young people, their children – to clean up for them.”
Soon after the rally, however, critics were quick to slam the activists and claim that locals will now be forced to restore the park that the youths have destroyed during their rally.
“You came to preach about protecting the environment while destroying an entire park. Oh, the irony,” someone wrote.
“Thanks kids. Destroying green spaces. What a gift to the people of Bristol…” another one expressed.
“This is an utter disgrace, children being bussed in from all over the country – great for emissions,” Conservative Susan Hall tweeted. “Not to mention that these children should be at school where they are safe, not encouraged to skip their education.”
After the protest, a GoFundMe page was started to raise some $25,000 for the restoration of the College Green park.
In addition, Thunberg was quick to speak out and defend the activists’ actions by saying that “grass will grow back.”
“Grass will grow back. Our ozone layer, icecaps, coral reefs, Australian bush and the Amazon Rainforest will not,” the teen said in her defense.
In support of the young activist, other protestors were also quick to suggest that the grass is already growing back and that the park will restore itself.
