A group of parents made an agreement not to test their kids for coronavirus in an attempt to stop schools from shutting down.
In order to keep schools open and avoid the cancellation of extracurricular activities, a series of Utah parents verbally agreed on the so-called ‘mom code’ that keeps them from testing their children for Covid-19.
The agreement follows as Gov. Gary Herbert announced that the Covid-19 cases in the state have reached their new high and that hospitals are on the brink.
While many parents reportedly praised the new agreement that aims to keep schools open, others suggested such code will put even more students at risk.
“Parents are saying, ‘let’s not test,’ just so they don’t have to worry about shutting down the sports teams. I think that it is absolutely a disgrace,” Genevra Prothero, one of the parents from the Davis School District, said in an interview with KUTV.
Despite the backlash, posts encouraging parents not to test their children for coronavirus keep appearing on various social media platforms and parents’ groups.
“Please STOP getting tested!!! It is 100% unnecessary. All it does is give the government and school district officials the power to continue to control us,” one Facebook post spotted by KUTV read.
“If sick, stay home and get better. We also need to be washing out hands, taking vitamin C & D every day, and practicing good hygiene. That’s it!”
Another Facebook post on the matter suggested that testing children for Covid is selfish because it may lead to contact tracing and the quarantine of other people.
“I personal[ly] think getting tested is selfish. Because of the fact that they contact trace everyone so one person leads to 30 people that have to quarantine or worse, programs like athletics etc. are shut down,” the post which was presumably written by another parent read.
“It’s mass hysteria [be]cause one person came in contact with another person that had the sniffles and ran to get tested! Stop the testing Stop the Contact tracing.”
