Parents locked their 8-year-old boy in a dark room smeared with feces and urine, authorities said.
Firefighters were called to the home in Pasco County, Florida after receiving reports of a fire. That’s when they found the young boy who was kept by his parents in a room while his sisters led a normal life.
Investigators arrived at the scene and said that the 8-year-old had been locked in the room by parents Daniel Davis, 37, and Kelley Davis, 36.
According to arrest reports, the room only had a mattress and a blanket.
His parents reportedly locked him in the room for up to 12 hours without access to electricity or a bathroom.
Officers found the bedroom smeared with urine and feces, leading them to believe that he was forced to do his things in his bedroom.
Police also said that the room had no light bulb and the window was covered.
The parents reportedly had five daughters who were not treated cruelly, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
One of the daughters slipped a box of matches under the door so the boy could burn his mattress.
Neighbors told local media that they were shocked to discover that a boy was living in the house because they had only seen the girls.
The family moved to the area in 2010, with the father working at a roofing and construction company while the mother was a stay-at-home mom.
One neighbor, Charles Clutter, told Tampa Bay Times: “They seemed normal. You truly don’t know who your neighbors are.”
