A mother claimed that she is forced to feed her 14 months old daughter three bottles of coffee a day because her family is not able to afford milk.
The baby Hadijah has become addicted to caffeine. Her mother says that the baby won’t sleep if she doesn’t get her coffee. She drinks about 1.5 liters a day.
According to Ladbible, ”The couple, Sarifuddin and Anita have just 20,000 Indonesian Rupia a day, the equivalent of £1.13 ($1.41).”
The Indonesian news outlet Coconuts says that Anita said that they don’t get enough income from her husband’s job of processing coconuts and that is the reason for not buying milk for the baby.
Kompas.com reported that Hadijah’s physical health is just like normal children of her age and her mother says that she is a highly active child and has had no problems with her physical growth. But NHS said, “Caffeinated drinks are also unsuitable for toddlers and young children.”
Anita told Kompas: “What else can we do? Our income is not enough to buy milk. We’re forced to give her coffee every day. In fact, she can’t sleep if she hadn’t had coffee. She can throw a tantrum asking for coffee before bed.”
The Coconut website milk is definitely essential to the health and nutrition of infants but the people living in poverty in Indonesia see it as an ‘unattainable luxury.’
After Hadijah’s story went viral, officials from the Polewali Mandar Health Agency say they have visited Hadijah and gave her a supply of milk and biscuits. They have advised their parents to stop giving her coffee to lower her risks of overexposure to caffeine or sugar at such an early age.
According to studies, it has been reported that coffee is not good for young children as it offers no benefits to them.
